‘Downton Abbey’ season 4 spoilers: Michelle Dockery on Mary’s happiness
All summer long with “Downton Abbey” season 4, you have heard story after story regarding how Mary could potentially find love again after everything that she went through with Matthew’s death. But if she does find someone, does that mean she is really going to accept their love? This perhaps has been an overlooked part of the equation, and thus something that is going to be explored a little bit more in-depth when the hit series returns to ITV starting in a matter of weeks.
Speaking to TV Guide on the question of whether or not we are going to see Mary happy again in the somewhat-near future, Michelle Dockery was hardly bullish on the notion, explaining that her journey with Matthew to get to a place of real happiness was something that literally took years. As you would expect, it’s hard to get that sort of positive momentum back after willing to put yourself through almost anything to make that relationship work:
“Not yet. I don’t know if she’ll ever be happy for a long time … Matthew made her happy and changed her from quite a spoiled brat into quite a nice person. At the end of [Season] 3, she had it all: She finally found the man of her dreams, she was married, she gave birth to a baby boy. It’s all wrapped up very neatly. All of that has been shattered now.”
One one of the leading candidates to steal Mary away from her sorrow is Tom Cullen’s Lord Anthony Gillingham, who does enter this season already with a past connection to the character. Unfortunately, just because he has feelings for her hardly means that she is even remotely interested in reciprocating them.
