Reid Scott leaving Law & Order during season 26; why?

As you get prepared to see Law & Order season 26 on NBC, go ahead and note that there is going to be yet another casting change.

According to a new report from Deadline, actor Reid Scott is going to be departing the series and the role of Vincent Riley at some point early on next season. He still had more time on his contract, and the move is said to be his decision, inspired by a desire to not have to travel back and forth constantly between New York and where much of his life and family is on the West Coast. The departure is amicable, and he will appear in order to wrap up his character’s story.

Luckily, we do know already that Law & Order has a plan in place for replacing Scott. The aforementioned site has gone ahead and noted that James Badge Dale is going to be playing a new Senior Detective, meaning that the show will go on and the expectation is that we are going to get a relatively smooth transition. This is hardly the franchise’s first rodeo and in general, we tend to think that helps.

As for why Law & Order in particular has so many exits, we tend to think it is a combination of factors. Any show that does 18-22 episodes a season is going to be really taxing on its cast and crew, and the procedural nature of the story also can be tough to navigate at times. Also, there are changes that happen at times for budgetary reasons, as a lot of Wolf Entertainment shows operate in a super-efficient way to keep them on the air. That does not appear to be what happened in this instance, but it certainly has in the past.
