House of the Dragon season 3 episode 2: The Otto Hightower shocker

We came in to House of the Dragon season 3 episode 2 on HBO this week absolutely anticipating a few big reveals — and boy, did we get that and then some!
Watching this story directly after the Battle of the Gullet almost cemented perfectly how this could and should have been the season 2 finale, as there were huge swings that led eventually to Rhaenyra finally achieving her goal of sitting atop the Iron Throne. Alicent did what she could to ensure this was possible, feeling as though there would be no other way in order to achieve piece. Unfortunately, this came at a cost that she did not expect. Rhaenyra owes Olivia Cooke’s character a great debt, but what is she actually able to do for her now? That is a really complicated question for her to figure out, and it could define much of the rest of the season.

Beyond just this surprise, though, there are others that the show may be forced to deal with in the aftermath of the choices made here. Take what transpired with Aemond, who ventured off to Harrenhal only to nearly be left for dead there. Alys could nurse him back to health and fittingly, she is also feeling somewhat spurned at the moment by Daemon, whose own actions may come back to haunt him.
At this point, it is easy to view the events of episode 2 as some sort of significant changing of the guard. However, at the same time, we do tend to think that nothing for the Greens is still set in stone. They still have a lot of other people who could inflict some damage and beyond that, there will be those who are even more loyal to them following what happened with Otto. The capacity for change is still high…
