‘Game of Thrones’ season 4 spoilers: A pivotal episode and a familiar face

Game of Thrones

Do you remember the news that Neil Marshall may be returning to direct another “Game of Thrones” episode? While some original claims suggested that he would be at the helm for the finale of season 4, the actual news is that his duties will entail something even more important than that.

According to Variety, the director of “Blackwater” (who accomplished that feat as a last-minute replacement director) will have an opportunity this year to direct the ninth episode of season 4 with a little more time under his belt. As all “Game of Thrones” fans surely know by now, this is the episode that traditionally is one of the most significant of the entire year. For a prime example, just remember that this is the time in which we have lost Robb, Catelyn and Ned Stark, and also the time that the Battle of Blackwater first took place.

The reason for having these events occur in episode 9 is pretty simple in that they give some time for the story to build and progress during the finale, which we traditionally see more as a bridge between the end of one season and the start of another. It keeps the season premieres from being completely stuffed with reaction shots and exposition, and we very much prefer it that way.

There is no announced premiere date yet for “Game of Thrones” season 4, but don’t be surprised if it comes to us either on March 30 or April 6 of next year.
