Doctor Who season 16: Still hope for long-term future?

At this point, we are well-aware of the fact that Doctor Who fans are feeling a little doom-and-gloom regarding the future of the franchise. Also, isn’t that understandable on some level? Just consider what we have read about the past few days!
Ultimately, here is the basic fact: The potential Christmas Special has been canceled. Meanwhile, showrunner Russell T. Davies is no longer in charge. None of this means that series is done; rather, a new process is beginning that could help to further shape the long-term future of the property.

To hear more right now on the subject, here is at least some of what Davies had to say as a part of a new interview with Gaydio:
“It’s extraordinary to see newspapers who should know better saying the show has been cancelled … It’s the opposite. It’s been put out to tender, and I understand that’s an industry phrase and people might not understand what a show being put out to tender means … Being put out to tender means – and this will happen to every BBC show, it’s happened to Casualty, it’s happened to the weather – it means the [show] is pitched to be made by an independent company, as opposed to the BBC.”
Do we think that this is going to be some speedy process? Probably not, and largely due to the fact that there is no real reason for any part of this to be hurried. Some independent companies may worry about the price tag or not having full ownership but at the same time, a proper fit may still be able to come in due time. From where we stand, the earliest we imagine the show returning is 2028.
