Power Book III: Raising Kanan season 5: Is Lou dead?

We knew heading into the Power Book III: Raising Kanan season 5 premiere that we would be losing people at some point. This is the final season and through that, there is a certain amount of inevitability when it comes to everything after the fact. We have prepared for that, mostly because the show has forced us to.
Now, we have to pay our respects to Lou Thomas, whose death is going to create a gigantic ripple effect through everyone in the family. He was in some ways a stabilizing presence for everyone, and we do think this is something that Kanan in particular is going to have to sit with. The fractures are already there, and they may very well just grow wider at this point due to the presence of Breeze.

So why make the move to kill a character like this now? Speaking in a new interview with Deadline, here is at least some of what showrunner Sascha Penn had to say:
It’s a seismic shock for the entire family, right? Because I think up until that point, there is this feeling of, I won’t say invincibility in the family, but it does feel like on some level they can’t be touched. They haven’t been touched in this way. So I think part of the reason why it hits quite as hard as it does is that it does set off the story in a way where it’s like, Oh, wow, anything is possible at this point. That’s the way it is for the characters as well; they’ve lost. What’s interesting is that Lou, and it’s probably one of the reasons why you and a lot of other people who watch the show care so much, was the heart and conscience of the family.
Ultimately, we’ve known from the start where some things are going. Also, we know present-day Kanan’s perspective on family and losing people. Things are going to get worse, and we just have to be prepared.
What did you think about Lou’s death at the start of Power Book III: Raising Kanan season 5?
