Doctor Who season 16 premiere date: Is 2026 even possible?

If you are like us, then you are probably waiting for some sort of news on Doctor Who to surface after yesterday’s shocking reveal. After all, Russell T. Davies is out as showrunner and if that was not enough, the BBC is now allowing external studios to come in and pitch ideas for what the next chapter could look like.
To put things in more specific terms, season 16 is really far away. Deadline estimates the earliest it could return is 2028, and even that right now feels optimistic.

So what are the potential hold-ups now? Well, a big one is the idea that a studio is going to invest a lot of money into making this show, knowing that the profits would be more limited due to a lack of ownership. Here is what a reported top producer had to say to the publication:
“[It’s a] bit of a nightmare for any producer in this market with the shadow of the Disney fallout … It’s hard to see another major U.S. studio replacing Disney. So the budget would be hard to get above £3M ($4M) [per episode] without significant co-pro or insane investment from the distribution arm [BBC Studios], which they will struggle to recoup on sales.”
The “Disney fallout” refers to Disney+ moving on from Doctor Who after the Ncuti Gatwa seasons, which were fairly pricey compared to what we have seen in the past. This is where we will issue yet another reminder that this is not necessarily a show that needs to be that expensive. The real impetus here has to just be finding imaginative stories that really get people talking about the property again.
