House of the Dragon season 3: The scale of Battle of the Gullet

Is there a legitimate chance that House of the Dragon season 3 is going to have the biggest set piece on television this entire year? The more that we hear about the Battle of the Gullet, the more likely it seems as though that could be the case.

After all, consider the fact here that this battle has been plotted ever since the end of season 2 and based on everything we’ve been hearing, it is going to kick-start almost the entirety of the rest of the series. People (and dragons) could very well die in the midst of a battle that showcases the navy of Westeros perhaps in a way that it has never been displayed before.

In speaking further to TV Insider, showrunner Ryan Condal did his best to detail everything that went into planning this particular part of the series:

Essentially, two years’ worth of research and development went into just figuring out how we were going to approach the sequence. I would say that probably a year of that was the actual planning, designing, and building of the infrastructure, just to be able to prep the filming of the sequence. Two different tanks had to be constructed (a wet tank and a dry tank), as well as gimbals to move the ships so they would feel like they were floating on the sea.

Then there were the months of storyboarding, pre-vis, and stunt design — and this was all after months and months of writing and revising the script itself! This one episode was the “effort” equivalent of making a (huge) major franchise movie.

We do think that the Game of Thrones franchise has such a rich legacy of creating incredible battle sequences that the bar here is sky-high. Then again, won’t it be a next-level feat if they actually manage to make this even better than our wildest imagination? It could help invigorate a show that drew some criticism back at the end of season 2.
