Today ABC confirmed their third contestant for Dancing with the Stars season 35, and this is someone who could actually come out of left field.

In a press release, the network made it clear that “Internet personality and second baseman for the Savannah Bananas, Jackson Olson” would be the next person entering the ballroom, joining Love Island star Maura Higgins and then Ciara Miller from Summer House. The early announcements are an indicator that the network liked doing this last year and wants to keep it going as a means to drum up excitement all summer long.

Bringing in Olson also suggests a couple of different things. For starters, DWTS is continuing to look for younger viewers who may not have watched the show before. He also fits the bill of “star,” though we recognize a lot of people may not be familiar with him. He has a million followers on Instagram and beyond just that, “Banana Ball” has become a huge entertainment property all over the country. It has re-engaged audiences in baseball in a way that they were not necessarily before. We know that Jackson is going to be willing to do just about anything to win but at the same time, not take things too seriously. As far as we can say, this is a philosophy that would benefit most contestants.

While we do recognize that the bulk of the cast right now are reality stars and influencers, there is typically a wide array of personalities that join it before the premiere. We still expect a couple of actors, someone super-nostalgic, a couple more athletes, and then a name or two that feel like a legitimate shock.
