NCIS season 24 spoilers: EP on cliffhanger resolution

Coming out of the NCIS season 23 finale on CBS, it makes sense to have many questions, especially about the fate of Torres and Matteo. Is one of them dead? We heard a gunshot, but did not see any of the action transpiring on-screen.

Ultimately, we did not come away from the end of the episode necessarily thinking that either person would be killed off, but that is mostly just because we lost Leon Vance not too long ago. To remove either another longtime character or McGee’s biological son — who we legitimately just met several weeks ago — would feel like an unnecessary punch to the gut. Luckily, it seems like those who work on the show agree.

Speaking further on this subject now in a chat with TV Insider, showrunner Steven D. Binder was cautious, but did confirm that killing someone is not the direction he is planning to go in moving forward:

Someone was hit. I can confirm that. I sort of had my fill this season, all of us, of killing people. So I can rule that out. And also, there’s not a lot of fun there. When someone’s dead, they’re dead. It’s much more interesting — I’ll think back to when Gibbs shot McGee. It’s much more fun when someone’s alive and been shot than when they’re dead. And by fun, I mean, interesting.

Obviously, McGee is going to have an interesting reaction to what transpires here one way or another, and that is easily something that the writers could be excited to play with moving forward. Also, if Matteo is in a particularly bad spot, how long does it take to eventually get him out?
