Saturday Night Live cold open: New Brett Kavanaugh, Kash Patel spoof

We had a feeling going into tonight’s Saturday Night Live that almost anything could happen — mostly due to the combination of host (Matt Damon) and also the sheer number of current events.

Now, what did the writers and producers actually opt to deliver here in the end? It started in a predictable setting in Washington DC, but actually a local tavern rather than a government building. This brought the show a chance to deliver their most frequent impersonation these days: Colin Jost as Pete Hegseth.

Honestly, we should have really seen this one coming: Damon reprised his role as now Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. One of the last times that the actor showed up on SNL it was around the time of the confirmation hearings, and that was when the impersonation went virual.

If there was a surprise here…

It was seeing the return of Aziz Ansari as Kash Patel just one week after making headlines. Just like Kavanaugh, we should have seen this coming given the premise: A number of powerful / controversial Washington DC men sitting at a bar together.

Is this one that is going to generate as many headlines as last week, or Damon’s first appearance on the role? We have a hard time thinking that but at the same time, the writers likely felt that this was far too easy a thing for them to ever pass up. Our real question now is whether or not we are going to see Aziz again in the finale — though some of that may be tied to whether or not Patel generates headlines over the next seven days.
