Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power still likely to span five seasons

For a good while now, there has been some discussion as to whether or not Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will still make the planned five-season run. We recognize that the third season is coming, but these are shows that cost a great deal of money to make. Also, while successful, we’re not sure that they have generated the buzz in the United States that Prime Video has hoped for. We cannot speak to viewership figures, but is this anecdotally drawing attention? That’s a hard thing to pin down.

What we can at least confirm is that the plan is still cemented for the series to have its five-season run … though there are also some caveats.

According to a recent report from the Ankler, the streamer (under the reasonably new tutelage of Global Head of Television Peter Friedlander) is still working to meet the five-season plan. However, any potential spin-offs are unlikely due to the hefty cost of producing each episode. Moreover, the Amazon-owned company would potentially need to a pay a “kill fee” of $20 million per season to the Tolkien estate in the event the show was canceled early. This further cements why Prime Video is happy to keep this going.

In the end, we do tend to think that there is incentive to keep rolling with The Rings of Power long-term. After all, remember for a moment that the work of Tolkien is pretty timeless and through that, there is always a chance more viewers will discover these properties long after they air. Meanwhile, the film world of all things Tolkien is still going strong, though it is pretty messy to figure out who owns the complete rights to what.
