We are certainly aware that heading into NCIS season 23 episode 14 on CBS next week, life will never be the same. How can it? These are characters who are still going to be reeling from losing the Director in Leon Vance, who literally was killed in his pursuit of trying to protect the agency’s future.

Given that this show is a procedural, there does have to be a certain amount of forward momentum from one story to the next. While Vance’s death is going to be paramount in the show moving forward, there also will still be murders to solve. The writers cannot really slow things down all that much.

Speaking to TV Insider following the shocking events of the 500th episode, here is at least some of what showrunner Steven D. Binder had to say about the path ahead:

“The team will be grieving, of course … But we felt it important that, at the end of the episode, the team is just as focused on Vance’s sacrifice as they are on their loss. Vance died to protect them all. And they are going to honor that by putting one foot in front of the other, and just continuing on their mission to protect and safeguard their country.”

One other discussion that we are intrigued to have in the long-term here is tied to who will eventually take over the position of Director. The obvious top contender here is Timothy McGee given that he briefly held the chair in the past and discovered that he was rather good at it. However, in doing that, you would also take Sean Murray out of the action. Will the writers really want to do that? You can argue that this is something that they would set up instead whenever we get to the final season … no matter when that may be.
