The Pitt season 2 episode 12 spoilers: More on Mel’s internal crisis

There are so many different storylines worthy of examination heading into The Pitt season 2 the rest of the way, but of course we tend to think that Mel’s is critical. This is a woman who finds herself constantly thrown into various emotional crises this season. First, there was the preparing for the deposition and while she got through that, she does not feel good about any part of it.

Now, she is also dealing from the revelation that her sister has a secret boyfriend who she was not previously aware of, let alone that the two have a sexual relationship. It has caused her to realize more that she has spent all this time caring for Becca, but has not really cared for herself — let alone tried to find an identity outside of work.

Speaking to Glamour about where her character has been left off at present, Taylor Dearden attempts to put it into perspective:

I think Mel was freaking out, and it’s not a sex freakout as much as it is realizing that the person she’s cared for forever may not need her anymore. Mel’s whole identity is wrapped up in being a caretaker, for her family at first, and then for her sister, and now also in the emergency department. All of a sudden, someone has a life of their own and is very happy where she is. It’s causing a major freakout and reset for Mel because she’s never known how to define herself as her own self.

Even early in the season when the criminal asks Mel, “What do you like to do for fun?” She has no answer because she never had to think of it. I don’t know if it came off, but I hoped to convey that question of, “Who am I?” for Mel. “What do I like? What do I want?” Just to keep that question alive, which also just adds to all the anxiety this season.

We would obviously love to see Mel figure all of this out, but here’s your reminder that it is unlikely to happen over the rest of the season. Luckily, there is still time for all matters to be sorted down the road, since a season 3 is coming and there is always a chance of a time jump.
