The Testaments spoilers: Show EP on spin-off’s early focus

One day removed from seeing the first trailer for The Testaments over at Hulu, isn’t it nice to have a spattering of further details all about what is ahead? We tend to think so especially since this spin-off is doing a great of allowing us to better understand what this series is going to look like.
Based on the trailer, it does not seem like one of the early goals for this series is to overwhelm us in darkness right away. We are viewing this show through the lens of Hannah / Agnes, and she may not have the same understanding of Gilead. Her world is different from June’s, and it may be a slower progression in the early going of realizing more and more who they are and what they need to do. We do think that the same sense of rebellion and fight against the regime will be here, but it may take a little bit of time.

Based at least on what we are hearing right now from executive producer Bruce Miller, one of the early goals is to slow things down and focus on the early days for these younger characters. Here is some of what he had to say further on that subject to The Hollywood Reporter:
“This is a sequel to Handmaid’s Tale, the show … There are parts of the [Testaments] book that take place very far in the future, and we want to save those things for far in the future; they’re goals we’re working towards. But there’s a compact bit of the story that takes place with the girls when they’re going through this process of finding husbands. That, as a core, is what we’re shooting for.”
While we cannot sit here and nail down a really specific run for the show, it certainly feels like it is going to last longer than a single year. By virtue of that, the writers can really take their time to build towards specific things.
