The Pitt season 2 episode 9: Is an Ogilvie turning point coming?

One of the things we have certainly come to realize about The Pitt through the past season and a half is that the characters are very-much complicated — not that this is much of a surprise. These are people who are in the midst of feeling profoundly stressed out over an extremely long shift. Some of them do not have the best social skills; meanwhile, others are arrogant.

When you think about newcomer Ogilvie, it feels clear that he has elements of both columns in his personality. He is socially awkward, but also judgmental and feels like he constantly needs to show how smart he is. He’s been largely disliked for his demeanor, including when he judged a patient for his weight on this past episode.

With all of that being said, are we going to see a different side to this guy soon? It does feel that way. Speaking to Gold Derby, here is some of what Lucas Iverson had to say regarding a personal turning point for his character:

It was just after the midpoint of the season. I emailed [R.] Scott [Gemill], the showrunner — who’s a genius and so generous with his time with us — a question about where all these lessons go. Ogilvie is a literal learner; he would have all these big events that he takes a lesson from and then he goes back to trying to impress. Initially, I was like, oh, he’s not learning. But I was like, that can’t be right. Otherwise, he’s not really a person if they go through this degree of experience and not be affected by it. It’s one day, right? He’s bound by the confines of how much a person can grow in the course of one day. He doesn’t want to show that this is affecting him. He’s actually quite a softie. He’s really, really sensitive. He experiences a lot of self-loathing. He’s a perfectionist. He holds himself to an impossible standard and everything that to somebody else would appear to be a lesson, to him is like a personal failure: “I should have known this thing already.”

We do imagine that in due time, some of this could become more clear — our fear with Ogilvie is that he is repressing so much that by the end of the shift, he could crumble. Yet, we will have to see where things go.
