Marshals spoilers: Luke Grimes on expectations for Yellowstone spin-off

Marshals season 1

For those who are not currently aware, the premiere of Marshals is coming to CBS this weekend of course, we think there is a lot to be excited for!

What is the foundation for this show? Well, that is pretty clear at this point. Yellowstone is one of the biggest hits in recent TV history, and we understand the idea behind giving Kayce Dutton his own show. He is a smart, likable character who brings a lot to the table — even though there are a lot of mysteries still. (Take, for example, the status of Monica, who has not been confirmed for the series at all.)

Speaking in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Luke Grimes makes it abundantly clear that he knew there was a lot of pressure heading into the season:

“I’m my own worst critic … I was like, ‘If you take a poll of who people want to have a spinoff, I don’t know if Kayce would be top of that list. I think there’s other characters that they would rather see. So there was a fire under me, like, it has to be good. If it’s not good, I’d rather not do it. We tried really hard to make sure that any of the original Yellowstone fans would have something to grasp onto. But if you’d never seen Yellowstone, we wanted this show to make sense on its own as well. I think we accomplished that as much as we possibly could.”

Ultimately, we do think the challenge with Marshals is going to be trying to bridge the gap between two different things. You want to still keep some of the serialized elements that were there with the original Yellowstone, but at the same time, this is a CBS show! It may at least adhere to some of that DNA where there is a different mission every single week.
