Survivor 51: EP talks season 52 and beyond

As we gear up to dive more into Survivor 50 on CBS a little later this month, why not speak even more about the long-term future? Recently we saw it get a season 51 renewal, and we also tend to think that season 52 is a done deal given that we often get two seasons filmed within a short period of time.

Is it insane to think that we could see a season 60? What about a 70? Honestly, this is one of those rare shows that manages to refresh its audience in such a way that there may not be a clear end for it in sight.

Behind the scenes, we can at least note that some of the producers are certainly not thinking about having to say goodbye. Speaking recently to Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Matt Van Wagenen made it clear that there is not a lot of conversation about the show going away:

I am hoping this show lasts long enough for my daughter to be on the Dream Team [that tests out all the challenges] and she’s eight. You have to be 21. Maybe for her we’ll make an exception and go 20. I mean, I do not want it to end. I don’t even talk about an end of Survivor. It’s like, when is the NFL going to end? It’s become something different. So I don’t envision an end.

No one brings more energy and passion to survivor than Jeff [Probst]. I know he loves it the way he talks about it. We work together closely and I see his passion and his love for it. So I don’t see that dying anytime soon. He always is able to find something new and interesting, and that sparks him.

We tend to think there are only two scenarios CBS would willingly shut the series down — if the ratings are bad, or if Jeff himself decides that he is done hosting. Even if he does ever leave, could the series still continue? It’s possible, but you would need to put a lot of thought into the next host. Pulling it off is so incredibly hard, much more so than anyone thinks.
