A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1: Is Dunk really a knight?

As we prepare to see A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 episode 2 on HBO this weekend, why not dive further into Dunk himself? He is absolutely one of the most likable protagonists we’ve had within the larger Game of Thrones universe but at the same time, is he harboring some sort of secret?
For the sake of this piece, let’s talk for a moment about Dunk’s knighthood, and whether it is a legitimate thing or not. We know that he is claiming that Ser Arlan of Pennytree gave him the honor shortly before his death, but this is not a scene that we have yet tto see. We suppose that for the letter of the law this is important — however, is it really for the sort of person Dunk wants to be?

The way that we view the situation right now is simple: Duncan has spent almost the entirety of his life in service of a very specific goal. He aspires to be important in this role, and he does seem to uphold some of the attributes that any good knight should want — whether it be chivalry, kindness, or working to protect others. A part of his desire is tied to wanting to make the world a better place, but also give his own life meaning.
Because of all this, does it quite matter if Arlan ever knighted him? He may not have had a proper opportunity; or, for whatever reason, he could have simply withheld the honor for a reason that still remains unclear. This is a situation that is hard to prove or disprove one way or another; for Dunk, the #1 thing he must do at this point is simply demonstrate that his actions make him worthy of a knight title. The more that he does that, the more likely it is that everyone will start to cast aside whatever specifics and/or questions that are being thrown at him.
