‘Doctor Who’ season 8: Former star talks Helen Mirren, Matt Smith replacement
We really don’t have any problem at all with the idea of Dame Helen Mirren starring in “Doctor Who,” mostly because she’s fantastic, but why in the world is everyone talking about her being the 12th Doctor, when there is no way in the world that this is actually going to happen? Our thinking is that the press hasn’t been able to latch onto any real casting rumors over the past few weeks, and thus, they’ve turned to talking about things that exist only in the imagination.
The latest quote comes via former star Arthur Darville (Rory), who was asked about the chatter in an interview with Anglophenia. His response? That of course, he’d be thrilled to see Helen given a shot, but he was also nice enough to suggest via his sentence structure alone that this is not going to happen:
“I’d love to see Dame Helen do it – best of luck to whoever gets it, though.”
The only thing that Mirren is hoping to see on “Doctor Who” is a female Doctor, just not her. This may happen eventually, but we’d be shocked if it does this time around. Our position still holds firm: So long as they cast the right person, we’re happy. We don’t care if it’s a man or woman, a different ethnicity, or a robot that happens to have supreme acting powers. We just want to be entertained, and perhaps we’re both old-school and new-school at the same time that way.
Rory Kinnear and Domhnall Gleeson are two male actors who have been linked to the role, but neither have expressed having any real interest in it. Unless production falls victim to the fabric of time and space, we anticipate the next season starting up later this year.
Now, let’s take a minute to talk about some facts. If you want to hear from someone who is actually interested in taking on the “Doctor Who” role, you can do so over at the link here.
