‘Breaking Bad’ season 5 spoilers: Vince Gilligan teases Walt’s greatest skill

Breaking BadLeave it to Vince Gilligan to continue to wax poetic about his show in ways that most viewers never really even thought about. Take, for example, the concept of Walter White excelling at lying more so than cooking a certain type of drug, or being a chemistry mastermind. Nonetheless, this is precisely what the man responsible for the greatness that is “Breaking Bad” is doing.

Even though we do still have an excruciating two months to wait until AMC starts to air the final episodes of the critically-acclaimed series, Gilligan had the following to say in an interview with Entertainment Weekly on how a certain emotional revelation by Bryan Cranston’s character could end up shaping the final episodes of this series more so than anything else he could do:

“We often said in the writers’ room that if Walt had a superpower, it would be not his chemistry knowledge or his ability to cook crystal meth but his ability to lie … Walt has been the world’s greatest liar, and I think the person he lies most capably to is himself. So in these final eight episodes, perhaps the lies will cease to find traction and the scales will start to fall away from Walt’s eyes. And when that happens, will Walt really begin to realize who he is? That’s a question that we asked ourselves a lot in the writers’ room this year.”

Gilligan in this interview also continued to stress that the finale is a sort of “victory” for Walt, which he cautioned does not necessarily mean that the man gets an opportunity to ride off into the sunset. We suppose this is really one of those situations that we’ll understand once we actually see it … though we really want to understand what it means now.
