‘The Voice’ UK sinks in first live show on Friday night
BBC One moved “The Voice” UK to Friday night this week in an effort to not have it compete against the beast known as “Britain’s Got Talent,” but apparently, it seems that not everyone out there got the memo. Overall, “The Voice” UK only drew on average slightly more than 4.2 million viewers, which is an all-time low for a show that also struggled at this stage in the competition last year. This audience eventually fell below the four million mark with the results show airing a little bit later on in the evening.
So what do we blame this disaster on? In part, it is the night. While Saturdays (unlike in America) are huge viewing nights in Britain, Fridays are not exactly the same way, as this is when most people opt to go out and enjoy outdoor activities rather than stay cooped up in front of the television. Dwindling interest, to be fair, probably also played a role, given that there are not many contestants this year that people really are going to be talking about.
Do we expect things to bounce back somewhat next weekend? Sure, mostly because there’s no more “Britain’s Got Talent” to worry about. What we don’t understand is why this show doesn’t decide to air in January and run until early April, or why they don’t air in the summer prior to “The X Factor.” It seems more logical to find your own audience, rather than trying to compete against a superior show that kills you at this stage in the competition.
