‘How I Met Your Mother’ season 9 and the best ‘Game of Thrones’ – Red Wedding jokes

How I Met Your MotherLet’s face it: There’s not a whole lot happening in the world of “How I Met Your Mother” right now. The CBS comedy is currently on hiatus until September, and production is still well over a month away from starting. You’ve probably heard most of the big news surrounding the show already (including the promotion of Cristin Milioti to series regular), and you may have already seen our list of guest stars that we would like to see back on the show moving forward into the final season.

So where do we go from here? How about tying the show back into current pop-culture events? As almost anyone who watches “Game of Thrones” knows, this past Sunday was the Red Wedding, one of the (spoiler alert!) most-shocking events that we’ve seen on scripted television in quite some time. The HBO series killed three important characters, some animals, and also gave a massive middle finger to anyone who assumed that the good guys would win just because they are the good guys. This world does not work that way.

As it turns out, “How I Met Your Mother” executive producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas are big fans of the show, and in the middle of a myriad of TV-related Red Wedding jokes, their comments about season 9 through the lens of this event have to be some of the funnier Twitter quotes we’ve seen in the past few days.

Bays – “This is awkward. We had a very similar thing planned for Barney and Robin’s wedding. #gameofthrones #HIMYM”

Thomas – “If #HIMYM were #GameOfThrones, the only characters left heading into Season 9 would be Robin and Ranjit.”

We imagine that Robin would make a pretty good Khaleesi … but who in the world would Ranjit be? We’re betting either Samwell the unexpected hero or the Hound, mostly because he seems to travel around aimlessly all of the time.

The “Game of Thrones” finale airs Sunday night, so let’s make something clear: If you are on the West Coast or are recording the episode know that we will be reviewing the episode live and it will contain events from the episode.
