‘The Voice’ UK winner Leanne Mitchell has flop to end all flops with debut album
Well, this certainly is not going to help the reputation of “The Voice” franchise as one that supports and cultivates its talent after the fact. Thanks to everything from poor promotion (at least thus far) to a lack of interest, the winner of the British series’ first season has managed to flop so hard with her new release in its first week that even Javier Colon and Jermaine Paul look stellar by comparison.
In its first week in the UK, Leanne Mitchell literally sold less than 900 copies (yikes!) of her self-titled disc, which comes after she spent months trying to defend herself and her music. There is massive finger-pointing here as to who is to blame for the lack of publicity, but she will be on the series itself come Friday to perform a song and hopefully drum up some more sales.
One thing that we can say for sure right now is that unless there is suddenly a sales spike thanks to her appearance back on “The Voice,” she will be dropped from her label soon enough. No single contestant from the American series thus far has managed to have a huge impression on the charts, but we will at least give Cassadee Pope a little bit of credit for getting “Wasting All These Tears” up into the top 10 on iTunes over the past few days. (Her coach in Blake Shelton has been very supportive of her online.)
There is still something resembling good news here to report when it comes to “The Voice” UK: It will be back for a third season, so no matter how bad things look right now, there are still opportunities present for it to redeem itself in the future.
