‘Glee’ season 5 spoilers: Vanessa Lengies on saying goodbye to Sugar Motta
We’ve been telling you here that the writing was on the wall for quite some time in that if Vanessa Lengies’ new show “Mixology” is picked up over at ABC, it would be time to say goodbye to her part as Sugar Motta on “Glee.” Well, the actress has finally spoken out about it, and it’s official.
In an interview with TV Guide, the former “American Dreams” star explained in pretty reasonable terms why she chose to leave the Fox musical for greener pastures:
“Getting to play Sugar Motta was one of the biggest opportunities of my life, and I met some of the most fantastic people, but I was being hired per episode … I loved getting to be there and dancing around, but I didn’t really have much of an opportunity to act.”
Lengies is very much honest on both fronts. Unlike Lea Michele or Chris Colfer, she had no sort of commitment for a season, and thus was just trying to keep herself available for work that may or may not come. Heck, she was barely present at all during the second half of the season before turning up in the finale. On the acting front, Sugar hasn’t had anything of substance to do since a Valentine’s Day storyline back in 2012 … which eventually disappeared as if the entire thing was a mirage.
There is still hope that Sugar will get a proper farewell on “Glee,” given that “Mixology” does not air until 2014 and she could have an opportunity to come back for a couple of guest stints if Ryan Murphy deems it so. Considering that the rumors are that “Glee” is shifting more outside of high school beginning in the second half of season 5, this move may be the best for all parties involved.
