Billboard Music Awards 2013: Carly Rae Jepsen, Macklemore, Nicki Minaj among winners
The Billboard Music Awards, like many other awards shows out there right now that focus on the art of creating popular tunes, really is not altogether interested in showing that many acceptance speeches. Let’s try to craft a little bit of context here: It took the show a whopping hour in order to get three awards passed out. Three!
Anyhow, keep checking back here for more updates, along with our quick analysis of the winners.
Top Rap Artist – Nicki Minaj. Can anyone really be that surprised by this? Nicki has a tendency to win almost every rap award that she is nominated for these days. This was at least one of her most competitive victories as of late, since she did have to compete against Psy and his billion-plus hits on YouTube.
Top Digital Song – Carly Rae Jepsen, “Call Me Maybe.” This was a much more interesting category, mostly because we could have genuinely seen any of the songs nominated taking home the trophy considering how many copies they all sold. The truth is, though, that 2012 belonged to “Call Me Maybe” just as much as it did “Gangnam Style,” and there are probably fewer people who hate it.
Top Rap Song – Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, “Thrift Shop.” It’s a deserving win, but we would have loved seeing Kid Rock giving this award to Psy after mocking everyone lip-syncing during the show.
Top Female Artist – Taylor Swift. She was a performer of night, and given her success in the past year, it’s hard to really argue it even if you are a Swift hater.
Top Album – Taylor Swift, “Red.” See above.
Top Male Artist – Justin Bieber. This one, meanwhile, is sure to be a little more polarizing. Not everyone loves some of Bieber’s recent antics, but he is still a hit maker of the greatest kind.
