‘Game of Thrones’ season 3: Diana Rigg grateful for role as Lady Olenna
When Diana Rigg was cast for the role as Lady Olenna on season 3 of “Game of Thrones,” it was certainly a surprise to many. This woman was someone who was a noted icon of decades back, and is someone who almost defined what it meant to be a glamorous TV star. Now, she is getting an opportunity to appeal to an entirely different sort of generation in a role that was the Dowager Countess long before Julian Fellowes ever came up with the idea for the character on “Downton Abbey”
So with all of this in mind, it is easy to say that the former star of “The Avengers” is grateful for the chance to take on such a meaty, interesting role as “Queen of Thorns” Lady Olenna. Speaking on the “Andrew Marr Show,” the actress had the following to say about the part:
“I couldn’t ask for better lines … I’m so lucky. I could be sitting at home crumbling but I’m not. She says all the things that other people dare not say … Also the costume is terrific. I don’t have to spend hours in make-up and I’m in a wimple, it’s great. I adore it, I absolutely adore it.”
When it comes to her makeup job, Rigg could not be any more correct, as there are so many other characters who have to go through rather extensive work just to prepare themselves for being on TV. For one example, just look at the work that has to be done in order to get the scar onto Peter Dinklage’s face, or the time it spends to attach the blonde wig on to become Danaerys Targeryan.
