‘Futurama’ canceled by Comedy Central; season 7 may be the end

Is the end here (again) for “Futurama”? Based on what we are hearing now, it appears to be the case. Entertainment Weekly reports that Comedy Central has declined to pick up the animated comedy for an eighth season, which means that the September 4 episode of the show (and the last of season 7) will likely be the series finale.

Of course, we say the word “likely” for a reason. This is not the first time that “Futurama” has faced this fate, as the show was picked up on Comedy Central after some time on Fox after it proved to be a ratings draw in repeats. While it has a devoted following, the sad reality here is just that it is not a big enough group of people to keep the show on the air. It is possible that a Netflix or a Hulu could try to pick it up, but for now we chalk that up as “unlikely” given that the show has already had a second chance.

If there is a silver lining, it is that series creator Matt Groening tells the publication that he really feels that fans are going to enjoy some of the show’s last episodes:

“We have many more stories to tell … [However], this is a really great way to go out. I think these episodes are the best ones we’ve ever done.”

Of course, Groening has another super-popular series still on TV in “The Simpsons,” which has been on the air for longer than that container of yogurt has been in the back of my fridge.  Are you bummed by this news, and do you think that there is a way still for “Futurama” to stay alive?
