MTV’s ‘Awkward’ season 3, ‘Deadliest Catch’ off to solid starts

AwkwardSo did airing during the school year derail MTV’s “Awkward” in any way? Au contaire. Rather, the season 3 premiere of the comedy series ended up actually faring better than the show last year, even with it facing more competition across the board.

Overall, the adventures of Jenna Hamilton ended up drawing a 2.3 rating in what is the network’s key measure in the 12-34 demographic. This is up 5% from the season 2 debut, and makes this the strongest debut yet for the show (which is great news considering the excellence of the premiere). What was perhaps the best news of all here was that “Awkward” proved that it didn’t need to run after some other popular show in order to generate an audience, which is fantastic in that other shows will be using it as a lead-in moving forward.

However, “Awkward” did not win the night when it comes to the 18-49 demographic that is more of a standard ad-friendly rating across all networks. The show drew a 0.9 in this measure (still solid), but the premiere of “Deadliest Catch” won the night with a 1.6. While the Discovery series is not the ratings titan that it was once was a few seasons ago when the show was going through a tragic time behind the camera, the continued support shows that there are few other reality shows out there that really capture something so chilling or intense. “Deadliest Catch” even managed to topple “Tosh.0,” otherwise known as one of the most-watched shows that almost no one talks about.
