‘Saturday Night Live’: Lorne Michaels addresses future, quiet on ‘Tonight Show’

While Lorne Michaels has been a staple at NBC for almost four decades, he is really just starting to completely dominate the world of late-night TV. After all, “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” is going to become “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” and he will be transitioning into the pivotal 11:35 p.m. time slot six days a week.

So was the executive producer brimming at the seams with excitement over the subject? Not exactly. Michaels was interviewed by Martin Short (a former cast member and host of “SNL”) at the Comedy On TV luncheon hosted by the Hollywood Radio and Television Society Tuesday, but he really did not talk much about the new “Tonight Show” at all. Instead, most of the conversation was geared towards the sketch show, some of the bigger decisions made as of late (including a Sandy Hook tribute shortly after the horrific event occurred), and also the fact that he really does not let criticism get to him:

“You just kinda go, ‘yeah, it’s uneven; we’re doing 90 minutes. There’s a variety of styles….the political people can’t understand why you’re doing something so dumb. It’s just all ‘Why did they have that thing?’ No one is ever completely satisfied.”

There are still great moments on the show, and we personally believe they outweigh the negative or the people saying that the show’s not what it used to be. After all, isn’t this what every generation says?

Michaels also discussed rumors as to whether or not he is going to be leaving the show anytime soon:

“I’ll do it as long as a possibly can. I think there will be a moment at some moment when I look at it and go, ‘I don’t have the same edge.’ And I think three years after that day is when I’ll stop.”
