NBC’s ‘Revolution’ charts new course in wake of Boston preemption

Due to an interest in providing more coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing last night, NBC opted to preempt a new episode of “Revolution” that was set to air following a new episode of “The Voice.” This move was also likely done out of good taste, given that the drama was set to have an episode that revolved around a bomb that one of the main characters possessed. (We don’t know how touchy the story was, but it would have still been in poor taste to air it.)

So how is the network going to schedule out the show moving forward? While it may not be ideal, a spokesperson for the network confirms that it was decided not to double-up on episodes on a given week, and instead just push back the show so that the season finale airs on Monday, June 3.

From one standpoint, this move is definitely unusual. Networks prefer to have their series wrapped up during the May sweeps, when there are still many viewers around and when advertisers are really charting data. However, the good news for NBC is that “Revolution” will continue to have a lead-in through this entire time in “The Voice.” Thanks possibly to coach Shakira’s own maternity leave, this season started in March, and will run through until near the end of June.

While the ratings for “Revolution” have slipped since the start of the season (and the news special about the Boston bombing last night actually performed better in the 18-49 demographic), this is still the network’s highest-rated new season, and is a lock to come back for another year.
