2013 MTV Movie Awards spike with Rebel Wilson as host

The numbers are in for the 2013 MTV Movie Awards, and they spell one thing: either the movies of the past year have excited network viewers more than anything, or that Rebel Wilson of “Pitch Perfect” fame was an appealing host for everyone at home.

Overall, the awards show this year (which is hardly on the same level in terms of viewership as MTV’s other big awards show in the VMAs) drew 3.8 million viewers. This is an increase of 21% in the preliminary numbers from the show last year, which aired around a month after the release of “The Hunger Games.” (This time, the awards show helped to debut the first clip from the trailer to “Catching Fire.”)

The big winner this year was “The Avengers,” which took home a trio of important trophies at the end of the night and proved after years of “Twilight” domination that the awards show does not have to solely rely on Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson products in order to be successful. After all, that franchise is now over, and “The Hunger Games” has already started to take over that spot. (As a matter of fact, we more than expect “Catching Fire” to clean house next year, especially with there being no reason whatsoever to be concerned about another “Avengers” film coming out this summer.)

Really, it was a pretty quiet awards show when it comes to buzz, save for maybe the random interruption by Aubrey Plaza during Will Ferrell’s acceptance speech.
