‘Game of Thrones’ season 3 spoilers: Gwendoline Christie on future for Jaime, Brienne
Even though Brienne did not even appear in the first season of “Game of Thrones,” the character is still one of the most-popular of all in the George R.R. Martin universe. She’s a woman, after all, who really defies most conventions for what she should be, and she is one of the few characters in this world that seems to have any sort of drive to act heroically. It’s hard to discount something like that, especially when so many others don’t follow this path.
So what does Gwendoline Christie have to say about playing this part? Speaking to TV Guide, she explains that in many ways, her character has managed to enrich even her own life and how she goes about every single day:
“I struggled for a long time with my hair, but then I’m grateful for the opportunity to realize that femininity doesn’t have to come from hair or any of those traditional female archetypes of appearance, So, that’s been exciting actually. I can’t speak with any kind of authority whatsoever because I’m just an actor and I only have my opinions, but I do think it’s really refreshing to have a woman depicted on a mainstream TV show that doesn’t obey typical aesthetics of females and the way they have been portrayed in the past. And I’m really excited to be portraying one of those women. And I hope that her popularity signals a greater expansion of people’s views about men and women and that gender types can be more flexible.”
Sadly, Christie was forced to be pretty quiet when it comes to the future of her character (though fans of the books are somewhat clued in), only really offering the following up as any sort of consolation:
“All I can say is that their relationship evolves in ways that no one could predict and everyone’s going to be very excited.”
