NBC’s ‘The Voice’ review: Jessica Childress, Amber Carrington close blind auditions
Personally, we’d hate to be one of the final contestants on “The Voice,” if for no other reason than that the coaches are going to pickier than ever. They only have a few spots left, and in some cases, they don’t have any room at all. If you make one mistake, there’s not many chances to come back for it.
We also felt during this episode that most of the stronger talent was already sent out on the stage, but with that being said, we at least had some solid talent that puts what we’ve seen on other singing shows to shame.
Mark Lennon – This guy totally looks like a rocker from Venice Beach. To make things even more interesting, Carson Daly actually was a big fan of his band “Venice” back in the day. Then, they didn’t turn around! Wait, can Carson turn his chair around and be his coach instead? We’d be happy with that.
Jacqui Sandell – Whenever you get a chair to turn around within about two seconds of your audition, it’s typically good news. We didn’t really think that there was anything that distinctive about her voice, but one of the problems for this dancer-turned-singer was simply that the song choice didn’t really allow for her to do that much with the notes. She did still get turns from Usher and Blake Shelton, and Blake’s decision to turn around so fast helped to win him the final member of his team.
Amber Carrington – Amber had a sad story about her mother passing away, and she probably also had a sad face as a country singer when she learned that Blake’s team was full. Luckily, Adam Levine benefited heavily from it, and his team is also now officially full. Right now, we’d say that he actually has the best overall team: there are a number of artists on his team that got all four chairs to turn around, including titans Sasha Allen and Judith Hill. He’s also got Midas Whale, which at the moment has to be our guilty pleasure of the competition.
Dustin Hatzenbuhler – Well, this is one heck of a last name, right? We like that this guy is a little bit nerdy (since so are we), and he’s lucky to have quite possibly the most supportive parents of all time. We also like that he’s a crooner, and anyone who visits here often knows our love for all things Michael Buble. Unfortunately, he didn’t get the attention of either Usher or Shakira … and we didn’t think he would. There’s not a lot of coaches that know what to do with this sort of artist considering the genre.
Luke Edgemon – Luke is a soulful singer, and we’re so happy that there was finally a guy of his type who didn’t come out with the annoying / offensive “I got a giant black woman stuck inside of me” line. The former “Glee” warbler also doesn’t look like the son of a preacher man, and while this performance was a little dull, the voice is there and can do some pretty amazing things. We don’t blame Usher and Shakira for turning, and Shakira probably won the guy over just by being silly and throwing some of Usher’s own tricks (including the token leg lift) against him. With this pick, her team was complete!
Jessica Childress – There really wasn’t any drama at all with this one: Usher was the only person left with a chair to turn, and this is the unfortunate thing about the final person in the blind auditions. You knew that he was going to end up picking her, and he spent a little bit time playing with the audience before giving her a shot at fame. We’re just happy that she was good, and she has a great personality, to boot.
