‘Glee’ season 4 song spoilers: Darren Criss, Jane Lynch, and … Nicki Minaj?
“Glee” has done some very ridiculous songs over the past several years, and most of the ones near the top of the list all share a common bond: they involve characters trying to rap. (The only exception is the mash-up of “Let’s Have a Kiki” and “Turkey Lurkey Time,” which we are pretty sure was conceived when Ryan Murphy had a little too fun at a “New Normal” cast party.)
Well, let’s talk now about what may be the weirdest thing the show has ever done, the sort-of mash-up of Mariah Carey’s “I Still Believe” with Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass.” The idea here was obviously convinced for Thursday night’s “Feud” episode out of the very public spat that the two “American Idol” judges had together, so it’s pretty great cross-promotion for the show. At the same time, this entire song is really rather baffling. The transition from Darren Criss (Blaine) singing Mariah into “Super Bass” is completely random, and it is made even more random by the fact that it is Jane Lynch’s Sue Sylvester who is trying her best to be Minaj.
Suffice it to say, Jane’s not really a rapper. However, at the same time there is a sort of awkward hilarity with it, like one of those really cheesy monster movies at three in the morning that you can’t stop watching. To her credit, she really goes for it when it comes to the versus (which hare hard to remember, let alone perform), and she hits all of the notes in the chorus rather well. (Plus, the straight-up cover of “I Still Believe” really needed this for the song as a while to be exciting.)
Where does this performance stand for you in the pantheon of weird “Glee” music? Do you want to see a new “Glee” performance featuring Lea Mcihele’s Rachel and Dean Geyer’s Brody? It’s not nearly as strange as this one, and it’s available for your listening pleasure over here.
