‘Glee’ season 4 song spoilers: See Dean Geyer, Lea Michele’s new performance

Dean GeyerIt’s not every often this season that you see Dean Geyer’s character of Brody actually serving as the anchor for a performance, but this is precisely what we are getting for the upcoming performance of “How To Be a Heartbreaker” from Marina & the Diamonds on Thursday night’s “Feud” episode of “Glee.” Which Lea Michele’s Rachel Berry is indeed present, she spends more of her time doing backup vocals on the song.

We really like the original version of the song, and we were excited to see how it would be interpreted on the show from the moment it was revealed. Geyer handles the song really well, which is not easy considering that it is both fun and also dark at the same time. Rachel comes in primarily during the bridge, but then lets Brody once again dominate the chorus.

As for the context of the song, it should be pretty easy to figure out: Brody is up to some pretty shady stuff at the moment with his mysterious stacks of money, and regardless of whether he is selling drugs (or himself?), this double life he is living is sure to crush Rachel eventually. After all, this is the sort of thing that cannot be hidden forever.

We will say this, even completely aside from the character and anything going on with him and Rachel: we feel pretty sorry for Dean. He obviously went on the show knowing that his character could lead to backlash simply because he’s not Finn Hudson, but did he ever imagine it ultimately being this bad? The guy has actually resorted now to deleting his Twitter account, and while it not be solely due to some of the negativity he has received over the past few weeks, that has to play a role, right? Just the fact that he has made so many fans hate Brody is yet another sign that he’s doing a great job in the role; it’s unfortunate that there are so many assumptions among young fans that Dean and Brody are the same person just because of who he plays on TV.

What do you think about this performance? If you want to hear Naya Rivera sing a certain Paula Abdul classic during this episode, you can do so here.
