‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 9 and ‘Scandal’ season 2: Shonda Rhimes on close calls
When you have one show to run on TV, it is a pretty difficult task. However, the challenge raises exponentially when you are trying to deliver a pair of shows at the same time, and there is no time of year busier for this than the February sweeps. As nice as it is to receive new episodes week after week for a month, it also is rather difficult from the production side of things to stay far enough ahead from what is airing that the editing and sound mixing processes do not turn into chaos.
In a new series of posts on Twitter, this is what “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal” showrunner Shonda Rhimes talked about when it comes to how far ahead her shows are from what is actually airing on TV,
“Just locked and loaded NEXT week’s Scandal episode and now post has to finish it — whew, that is cutting it SUPER CLOSE! … With GA, we are TWO ahead in terms of finishing episodes for post. For now. That will change very soon – I’ll be cutting it close there too!”
The good news for Rhimes is that there will very likely be a break coming up soon. In order to ensure that there is enough episodes left to cover the 3-4 weeks of May sweeps along with a good chunk of April, we’re likely to see at least two or three weeks of repeats in March and early April. Filming for most shows typically wraps in April or early May, and she and her talented team will have plenty of time (at least by TV standards) to get the final episodes of the season ready to go.
As for how Shonda handled both of these shows along with “Private Practice” earlier this year, that is really beyond us.
