‘Alphas’ canceled by Syfy after two seasons

Even though you could very well say that this news was bound to be announced eventually based on the season 2 ratings, it is still rather sad to hear: “Alphas” on Syfy is no more. The network made the decision to ax the fan favorite series this week, which makes it yet another casualty of a network that has lost much of its strong original lineup over the past few years.

The news was first announced in a series of posts on Twitter by some of the show’s cast members, and it was then confirmed a little later in the day, when the network released an official statement explaining their decision:

“Syfy has decided not to renew Alphas for a third season. We’ve been proud to present this entertaining, high-quality series for two seasons and to work with an incredible ensemble of talented actors, producers and creatives as well as our partners at BermanBraun Television. We’d like to thank the show’s dedicated regular viewers for their tremendous support.”

With this move, Syfy showed that they are obviously banking big on their upcoming series “Defiance,” which they are launching with a huge promotional campaign that even includes a companion video game. Considering that many of their other series at the moment are either imports (“Lost Girl”) or shows that are co-productions with other countries (“Being Human”), the network definitely needs an original hit in order to justify sending both this show and “Eureka” to the curb.

This has been a difficult week for cable series with devoting fan followings; after all, the end of “Alphas” is coming just a day after it was first announced that “Drop Dead Diva” was going to be ending on Lifetime after four seasons on the air.
