Dexter: New Blood season 1 finale: Is Dexter Morgan really dead?
From the start of the season, “inevitable” was the word that showrunner Clyde Phillips used to describe the season. There was always a fear that the character would die, mostly because this is how many thought the show originally should have ended. While he may be a compelling person to watch, he’s also a murderer. When you do the things that he does, there are very few ways out.

There were a number of different reasons why the character could have died; yet, what happened made a certain degree of sense. The problem? It was also really rushed and this should have been the end of a season 2 or season 3. His own son Harrison shot him, but not in the way anyone would think. Dexter saw this as the only way out, and the only way to ensure that he wouldn’t get the death penalty. The scene itself was certainly poignant, but also heartbreaking due to the way in which Harrison had to become a killer — even if Angela was there to cover it up after and turn it into an officer-involved shooting.
Ultimately, there was another reason why Harrison shot him: Logan. Dexter killed him and that turned the tide on everything. It caused Harrison to realize that Dexter wasn’t quite like him, and his own darkness and pain was different. The two weren’t one and the same.
As for Harrison, the finale ended with him driving away from Iron Lake. Is he ready to start off a new life elsewhere? They’re leaving that open for a reason.
