Golden Globes rankings: ‘Breaking Bad,’ ‘The Newsroom’ actors face off
For this new edition of our Golden Globes rankings, we are putting the focus entirely on the drama actors and what should be a reasonably interesting race. While there does seem to be a frontrunner based on the awards show’s voting history and current trends, there is just enough leeway here that we really do see anyone in the top three walking away with the gold at the end of the night Sunday.
In case you are new to our rankings here, know that we are taking personal preference out of this and basing it entirely on just who we believe will actually win the award at the end of the day.
5. Steve Buscemi, “Boardwalk Empire” (HBO) – Even though “Boardwalk Empire” airing at the end of the year could help when it comes to the voting, this was actually a season that was very under the radar. Therefore, we really don’t see Buscemi taking home a trophy as something that is a serious and viable possibility this time around.
4. Jeff Daniels, “The Newsroom” (HBO) – Did everyone really think that Kelsey Grammer was going to win last year? No, and that is precisely why we have Daniels (who is probably ranked last by most people) in fourth place here. He is someone we very much enjoyed on “The Newsroom” all year as Will McAvoy, and the fact that both he and the show as a whole were nominated suggests that there are voters who are fans.
3. Jon Hamm, “Mad Men” (AMC) – He has won the Golden Globe before, but just as with the Emmys, he is typically left empty-handed more often than not. It’s problematic for him that the show as a whole failed to net a drama series nomination over “The Newsroom,” and this polarizing season will probably not give Hamm the same chances as he usually has … but don’t completely count him out.
2. Bryan Cranston, “Breaking Bad” (AMC) – We give Cranston around a 20% of winning this award, with the one thing going for him being that he has never won a Golden Globe before, and maybe some of these voters have finally recognized just what a brilliant show they’ve been missing out. Cranston is also running out of chances, with there only being one more opportunity for him moving forward.
1. Damian Lewis, “Homeland” (Showtime) – He did not necessarily have the sort of rich ambiguity in season 2 that he did the first time around, but there’s still no questioning that Lewis was brilliant this year. He’s coming off an Emmy, and his show is close to a shoo-in to take home the Outstanding Drams Series prize. Count on this happening.
