‘Leverage’ series finale ends strong on TNT
Even though we feel like this is hardly any consolation at all to those out there who wanted to see “Leverage” survive for a little bit longer on TNT, isn’t the following ratings news a little bit better than the show going out with a whimper after five seasons on the air?
Overall, the network’s drama series scored a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic for its series finale that aired on Christmas Day, and it also managed to draw 3.03 million viewers, which is its highest viewing figure for a new episode in over two years. When you remember that Christmas is a day where television in America traditionally comes secondary to friends and family, this achievement is really even more remarkable.
For those curious, the new episode of “Rizzoli & Isles” that also aired on the holiday drew a solid 4.4 million viewers along with a 0.8 rating, which makes us wonder if any other networks are going to consider possibly trying out some original programming on the holiday in the future. While the negatives for making such a move are made pretty clear above, there are some distinct positives, including the fact that it does allow you an opportunity to compete against a smaller amount of new programming, and many families by Christmas night are exhausted and are done with opening presents, anyway.
As for why TNT canceled “Leverage” to begin with, low ratings are a primary reason, though you could also cite a number of other factors including a strong development slate that the network believes will be even more successful. As for whether or not that strategy pays off, that is a major gamble for them to take.
If you want to see the official statement released by the network on the “Leverage” cancellation, you can do so over here.

Thoroughly disappointed in TNT. Leverage is such a great show; one of the few ‘unique’ plots on TV. The characters are engaging and well meshed. Bad move on the networks part. Why do the ridiculous NOT reality-reality shows continue, and don’t we have enough ‘talent’ shows, while a good program like leverage is cancelled. Start paying attention to what intelligent viewers want instead of what the ‘Jerry Springer’ type of people want!
