So what is the main source of danger within the premiere episode? It shouldn’t shock anyone that there are some problems coming the midwives’ way, and this time around, it has to do with a disease that could impact almost all of Poplar. In a post on Twitter (see below) from the series’ official account, you get at least some sense of what is coming.
Diphtheria is a disease that can prove deadly, even if treated. This is why things such as vaccines are so important. While there was one developed years before Call the Midwife season 9 takes place, that doesn’t mean that a lot of patients had access to it at the time. Today, this vaccination is one of the most common in the world and it helps to ensure the spread of the disease in most parts of the world.
For the main characters on Call the Midwife, we imagine a big part of the story will be helping others while they also do their part in order to help themselves. We’re sure that some of these characters are prepared for what lies ahead here, but that doesn’t mean that it is easy. They’ve gone through a lot, but they continue to do whatever they can to take on a wide array of struggles as they come their way. This is a show about self-sacrifice, care, faith, and heartache. They’re all rolled up sometimes into a ball that expands outward over the course of an hour.
