Doctor Who season 12 premiere: What are the ratings expectations?

Coming up on Wednesday, the Doctor Who season 12 premiere is looking to make a splash on BBC One. But just how big could it be? How high are current expectations?

For the time being, we don’t want to be overly optimistic that the ratings here are going to set any records. Viewership for most series these days are down, at least in terms of people watching things when they are initially on. This is in a lot of ways a consequence of recording devices and streaming services.

Yet, at the same time you can argue that there is a perfectly good reason for the season 12 premiere to draw better numbers than the 2019 New Year’s special, which drew 5.15 million viewers in the United Kingdom. That episode wasn’t anywhere near as isolated from other installments as Wednesday’s Doctor Who will be. This is the first installment in a year, and sometimes distance makes the heart grow fonder. Add to this the fact that there is a James Bond tribute-of-sorts coming in this episode, and there are reasons for some optimism.

Our feeling right now is that the season 12 premiere should, at least, match the ratings of last year’s special, if not get some better numbers overall. This will set up the remainder of the season rather well! (Following the premiere, new episodes air on Sunday nights.) The only thing that could trip up the premiere is airing on a Wednesday, and it’s possible that not everyone will get the day off.

No matter what the premiere ratings are, though, we wouldn’t think that they would impact the long-term future one way or another. After all, there will be a season 13 provided that there isn’t some sort of horrific ratings catastrophe in the months to come. One episode isn’t enough of a sample size.
