Call the Midwife Christmas Special 2019: Cast on filming in Outer Hebrides
In the video below, you can see some of the BBC series’ cast, alongside executive producers Dame Pippa Harris and Heidi Thomas, breaking down some of what is coming. Within the special this year, you’re going to see some of the characters heading down the Scottish islands in order to help a number of people in need. This is a rugged landscape, one that didn’t have anywhere near the same level of healthcare as you often see in Poplar. It’s a completely different world, one with an immense amount of space and one that changes depending on the time of day and also the temperature.
One of the funnier parts of the video is hearing people like Helen George and Leonie Elliott describe how they experienced the wildlife of the region — Leonie even describes being delayed getting to set because of cows and sheep on the road. It’s just a world that moves at a different speed and it may give the actors and characters alike a new appreciation for the world. We would imagine that, in the end, the goal is for a lot of viewers watching this episode to feel the same exact way. There are going to be a lot of people out there watching the show who probably aren’t too familiar with the Hebrides, or what it is like living within more rural communities. We know that here America, it will be especially fun for PBS viewers to see this on Christmas Day. Not only are the islands so different from anything we’ve encountered before, but there’s also an age and a history there that should be fascinating to see unfold. The architecture and the feel of the land is so very much different.
