American Horror Story: 1984 finale: ‘The Living Years’; a powerful moment

American Horror Story: 1984

Tonight on the American Horror Story: 1984 finale, we had plenty of questions. Take, for example, this: Who was the final girl?

Well, we think in some ways that’s a question without a clear answer. When it comes to Donna, we learned that she survived and became the head of the asylum that once housed Mr. Jingles. That proved to be rather valuable, especially when it comes to the arrival of Bobby (Finn Wittrock) to Camp Redwood. He arrived there in order to get a little bit more information when it comes to his father Ben, the person who tried to give him a better life from afar.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the finale was how everything ended: With Montana, Ray, Trevor, and others working in order to actually save Bobby rather than kill him. They’d learned something from their time at Camp Redwood and they decided to use some of what they’d learned in order to help him escape Richard.

We know that Bobby wanted a little bit of closure … but did that actually happen? Well, he was able to eventually find Ben and get a little bit of peace and solace for himself. This came about in one of the series’ most emotional, moving moments … one that then led to a playing of “The Living Years.” That song choice for the finale was outstanding — it’s a song that we haven’t heard in forever, and it’s definitely a song that added some resonance to the big scene with Bobby’s departure.

Is this the most moving conclusion to an American Horror Story season in some time? We’d say that, at least, this is the best conclusion of the season since Coven.
