Madam Secretary season 6 episode 6 sneak peek: A deepfake controversy

For one reason or another, deepfake videos are becoming a significant part of public discourse — even on primetime television series. Earlier this weekend, this was a big part of the story on NBC’s The Blacklist. Meanwhile, it’s also set to now become a centerpiece to Sunday night’s new Madam Secretary episode.

What is set to happen to Elizabeth McCord on this coming episode is that there is going to be a hateful video that surfaces on social media, and it’s one that could end up threatening the relationship that all of America has with South Korea. It’s dangerous, very dangerous, and there’s no way around it. It also looks as though we’re going to see a trade agreement fall apart over the perception that this video has caused.

We’re sure that you’ve heard of the phrase “perception is reality” before, and it appears very clear to us at the moment that it applies here. If people buy into what Elizabeth is saying, in a lot of ways it doesn’t matter all that much if it is true. She’s going to have to find a way to circumvent some of this, including prove potentially that everything within the deepfake is fale. That may be the only way that she can get out of this situation and ensure trust.

The unfortunate thing in general is that as time goes more and more buy, some of these issues are going to become more prevalent. One of the things that Elizabeth is going to have to figure out as a world leader is a number of ways in order to ensure that technology works for us, as opposed to ways in which it can prove hurtful. Because that’s not something you often know until said technology arrives in the hands of the mass market, that makes the process of trying to figure stuff out so much more difficult.

Hopefully, though, Elizabeth is going to find a way to solve this problem during this upcoming episode … even if it does prove difficult.
