Ratings: NCIS, This Is Us, New Amsterdam take on World Series

Just how formidable is the World Series as a ratings threat? Baseball can draw big numbers, but that doesn’t quite mean that it’s going to put a big dent in ratings elsewhere. For more evidence of that, just check out the performance of some of the shows that aired opposite against it.

NCIS – Yes, it’s true that this is not the show that it once was in the 18-49 demographic — last night’s installment drew just a 1.1 rating, a sign that most viewers within the designated age range are looking at other things these days. Yet, we’re also talking here about a show with an audience of more than 11 million viewers! It had almost as many viewers as baseball last night, and that number may end up surging above baseball when you include DVR numbers later. After all, how many people are going to be recording and watching baseball after the fact?

This Is Us – Much like NCIS, This Is Us is not the same show that it once was years ago. This is a series that at its peak was generated more than a 2.0 rating. Yet, it drawing a 1.6 rating last night was enough to match it to some other recent performances. Not only that, but there are no signs that it’s going to be slowing down soon.

New Amsterdam – This has to be one of the more pleasant results of the night, as the Ryan Eggold series drew a 0.9 rating last night, up substantially in the demo versus what we saw previously. It’s also easily topping NCIS: New Orleans in the demo. While there were some stumbling blocks for New Amsterdam last season after This Is Us ended, it’s showing this fall that it’s capable of picking up somewhat where it left off in terms of getting a good lead-in boost.

In the end, the big conclusion that you can draw here is simply this: The World Series isn’t a huge ratings threat week in and week out … even if it is able to generate some great numbers on its own. (For the record, though, baseball drew a 2.9 rating in the preliminary numbers last night.)
