Will Milo Ventimiglia leave This Is Us if Jack stories diminish?

Milo Ventimiglia leaving

Will Milo Ventimiglia ever leave This Is Usor will the NBC show just decide to move on from Jack Pearson? It’s not a question that we want to think about, given that Jack is the emotional heart of the series.

Yet, you can also make the argument that the stories for Jack are a little bit more limited than for some of the other characters. He’s dead — and we’ve known that since early on in the show’s run. We also know how he died, and also about his time in Vietnam. Some of the major parts of Jack’s life have already been mapped out, so this is where we are with that question again.

Here is the good news, though — even if Milo’s role onscreen is ever more limited (and there are no guarantees of that), he does plan to be very much involved. He’s directing Tuesday night’s new episode, and that is something he wants to do moving forward, as well.

Speaking in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ventimiglia made it clear where he stands amidst the long-term future of the series:

“Even though there may be the perception that his storylines are limited, there’s always going to be some kind of relation between what the kids are going through today and what they experienced in the past, what they saw from their father in the past, or how Jack impacted or Rebecca in a way that he’s always going to be with her.

“I’m pretty familiar with what Jack’s presence is going to be through the next couple of seasons. I know through six. But I also know that, if maybe there’s some moments where you need to put Jack on the bench because some other story storylines are taking over, they can always call me out to direct those episodes. I think there’s always going to be a version where I’m around, but maybe I’m not in front of the camera on the show.”

Based on where things stand right now with This Is Us and the quotes that we’ve heard, it wouldn’t come as a shock if season 6 proved to be the final one. This is a show that functions better when there is a specific, finite plan. It also guarantees that the writers will be able to thread a character like Jack into stories in a way that makes sense.

In conclusion, Jack’s story is not over — and even when you don’t see Milo onscreen, his presence will still very much be there.
