Supergirl season 5 ratings slide; the state of NCIS: Los Angeles

Supergirl

There are some new ratings takeaways worth discussing from Sunday night’s primetime lineup, and it starts with this: What’s going on with Supergirl?

In theory, it felt like a good idea to create a one-two punch on Sundays with this show and Batwoman. Yet, last night’s new episode of the Melissa Benoist series drew just a 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic — one of its lowest live ratings to date. (Batwoman stayed reasonably steady at a 0.3, but did lose a chunk of total viewers along the way.) Supergirl is down so far over 20% in the demo from season 4, and while drops of 15-20% are fairly standard year-to-year, it does get to a point where the declines are more noticeable.

There are still two more things we want to point out here — lower ratings don’t mean the show is getting canceled (we think it will be safe for at least one more season), and last night’s drop could be somewhat due to both the premiere of Watchmen and also a high-profile NFL game featuring the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles. Yet, it is still a noticeable decline, and we don’t think it’s a great thing when you start looking for reasons why ratings are lower.

As for another notable subject… Is NCIS: Los Angeles doing okay for itself so far this season? We’d argue so, at least when you think about its lead-in and then also its year-to-year progression. Last night’s new episode drew a 0.7 rating, and actually improved on its God Friended Me lead-in within that measure. It is down around 10% following last season, and that’s not so bad of a decline. We do wonder sometimes if it would help NCIS: LA to swap timeslots with God Friended Me, but we understand CBS wanting to use a better timeslot to try and support one of its newer shows.

For the record, Madam Secretary drew just a 0.4 rating in the demo at the end of the night — we’d be more worried about this numbers, provided that this wasn’t the final season. We’re a little more hopeful about NCIS: LA, mostly because all of this franchise is continuing to be steady.
