Riverdale (Betty & Jughead) vs. 9-1-1 (Bobby & Athena) – ‘Shiptober poll

Welcome to ‘Shiptober 2019! Throughout the month of October, CarterMatt will be bringing you our annual tournament featuring some of best ‘ships in all of TV. What is a ‘ship? It is comprised of characters you want to see together romantically. Maybe they’re already together, or maybe they’ve never been together. It doesn’t matter. ‘Shipping is one of the most popular parts of any TV fandom, it’s super fun and this tournament is a celebration of that.

Within this piece, we’ve got another pair of popular ‘ships that are set to do battle in hopes of making it to round 2. In one corner, you’ve got Betty & Jughead a.k.a. Bughead from Riverdale. Meanwhile, in the other you’ve got Bobby & Athena, fresh off their wedding, over on 9-1-1. These are two popular shows and, in the end, one of them will have a chance to keep fighting as the poll presses on.

Betty & Jughead, Riverdale (#3 seed) – What we have here is a prime example of a longtime ‘ship that, no matter the hurdles, manages to stay exciting and invigorating. It’s a prime example of how a show can allow itself to be malleable based on what’s working on the screen. Bughead is a pairing that works so much better on TV than it ever did in the comics, and as we prepare for season 4 starting in the upcoming days, it’s clear that there is still so much more in the way of material to explore.

Bobby & Athena, 9-1-1 (#6 seed) – Meanwhile, here you have a couple who clearly has a fantastic relationship, one that has already evolved and changed in some interesting ways. The two are now married, they’re committed to each other, and they’re trying their best to tackle the next phase of their lives — while also continuing to deal with very complicated jobs and issues from the past. There’s a lot going on here, but isn’t there always within the 9-1-1 world? At least with them married, we feel like they’ll withstand the test of time.
